Obituary

Sekmet. AKA Met, was found by her owner on the South Suburban Humane Society's website 3-1/2 years ago. It was a sad and mostly unknown story...a 17 year old cat, who at some point was feral and was a trap and release, was at the shelter for 13 months, eventually taken in as a Foster by a volunteer, and didn't have any adoption interests during her 13 month residency. Despite Met being anti-social and completely disinterested in a meet and greet, she was adopted that day. She was renamed after the Egyptian goddess who, among other things, was the goddess of chaos and war. Let me tell you, at times she lived up to those qualities. She was not a fan of her siblings when she first came home. She eventually became tolerant of them and was often seen lying with her sister, Artemis. Together they would guard the bathroom door while her owner got ready for work. When she didn't want to be bothered, the Goddess of Chaos and War came out in her and she would slap her sister in the face, leaving scratches behind. She had a meow in the morning that sounded like she was saying 'Hello'; the hello ruminating through the house as she waited for her breakfast. Most times she could be found in her owner's lap, tagging along at her heels, or sitting in the kitchen aggressively requesting a snack. At times if she didn't get a snack when she wanted one, she would stand on her hind legs and help herself to her brother's dog food like it was a buffet just for her.

She lived to 20-1/2 which is a long time for a cat. I don't know how her life was before being at the shelter but I can't imagine it was easy being a feral cat. Luckily, her last 3-1/2 years were filled with love, safety, and security. She always had a warm bed, 2 bowls of food, and company so she was never alone. For such a small cat, she left a big imprint in the home. She was a good cat and is missed.
